An actual song fromn 1988

This was a song from 1988. Yep, actual lyrics! No idea how the music went. Maybe it's on a copyright tape from that year...?
Reading these I understand why no record company number counter pinhead exec understood what the hell I was about!

Cousin from Kingston

East West lady
On a channel to nowhere
Blue stain satin diamond
Barrette in her hair
Old man’s bitchin’ about her
Hangin’ around
But don’t feel sorry
She’s a sister of Dionysian

AC\DC beatin’
Traffic at midnight
Roadside action heavy
By moonlight
Bourgeois debutants cloudin’
The sunshine
And all our efforts couldn’t
Re-route the main line

Yeah, too much flows between her eyes
To ever be honest or true
Half a quart of blue blood whiskey
And she’ll be ready for you

Stand still promise
With the Fountain of Youth, yea
She dives for a nickel
But the quarter recoups, yea
We should’ve made a deal
With the Senate of Suffer
Still all that bulls**t won’t
Print you a number

And so it’s round and round
We run
A snake sweat bottle and a
Cousin from Kingston

© 1988 Word and Music by Paul Tait

LEGACY REVIEW: Boston Rock and Roll Press, 2000

Mental Picture\Unlistenable Mess: The Completed Home Recordings

Paul Tait 1992-2000

Steve Winwood once said of his self produced self performed album “Arc of the Diver” that it was a text book case in what not to do as a recording engineer. Clearly this collection of one offs and midnight madness’, from an engineers perspective, could sit beside Winwoods without bowing in deference. In fact, you could say Mr. Tait has rewritten the book on what not to do as a recording engineer.

Recorded on a TASCAM 4-track cassette (yes, cassette) deck, mixed to a cassette (yes, again, cassette) deck and then slapped on to digital (finally some sense!) this 46 song two CD set follows a clear and precise a recipe for hiss, pop and crackle!! On some of the tracks it is evident that no attempt at noise reduction was attempted whatsoever; making for a highly agitating listen to for those of us with sensitive ears.

But should you be able to shelve your modern aural sensibilities, your digital ears if you like, and simply take in what the music has to offer; the performance, the words, the songs themselves, then this is an extraordinary collection of work. Paul Tait is truly one of music’s unsung, unsigned greats when it comes to pure pop rock expression. And by pop rock music I do not mean the fluff we accept today for contemporary pop rock music, I mean good old fashioned solid pop rock and roll songwriting delivered with passion, zeal and just the right amount of humor.

The discs are divided into two camps: Mental Picture and Unlistenable Mess though clearly the latter pronouncement (an example of Tait’s self effacing humor) could be either. The first fifteen or so songs are, though, from recent years when we assume Paul figured out what DBX meant and that the button had to be “On” before it worked. I would recommend these tracks for those of you who either A) never heard Paul before or B) listen to music for a living.

And a note to the uninformed: Paul Tait is not a new name on the Boston scene. He first debuted in 1982 with a radio friendly rocker called “Pop Musician”. Over the ensuing years, he released song after song, album after album but never quite got out of Denver, as it were (for a retrospect of his more professionally done and radio friendly recordings pick up “Survivor After All: The Best of Paul Tait”). Retiring from performing in 1994, he continued to record and release records locally up until 1999 when he hung it up for good. Or so we were lead to believe…. This newly released offering may indicate that all the “cookies” are not quite out of the jar. We just truly hope that the rest of them are recorded better!!

Rating:

The Recording: No stars; forget about it; Paul should hire George Martin

The Content: Four stars; top notch; can’t beat him as a songwriter or pianist, but he needs a George Martin or a Phil Ramone to really bring his songs to life.

APPLE MUSIC!!

I am on Apple Music. Not to be confused with iTunes, Apple Music is a streaming service as opposed to a store. Similar to Spotify. Here are the charts for the last three months:

Done!

Last Monday, the 23rd, I started the basics on a new album. Piano\Vocals\Additional keys\a rythmn trak\backing vocals and a Narration track for Kenny Lewis to replace me not being there. It runs along with the song saying what I want and when I want it.

For some songs I provided a demo, either live or old 4 track, as a guide.

Finished last night\early morning. Everything is now at Mixed Emotions Music!

I am so fortunate to have the same team that worked on the 2010-2011 albums on this one. Casper Jones, guitars; Pete Koeplin, Drums; and Tracy Ferrie, Bass. Boston is not touring this summer so Tracy is available. Stroke of luck though honestly I would have waited for him to be done with the tour if they had chosen to (or Tom had chosen to). He is that important (as they all are - Example, I can't imagine any guitarist on my songs except Casper).

Done. On my end anyway. Loads coming when the drums are added (listening) bass is added (listening) and the guitars added (listening), Then first mixes (listening - a lot) final mixes (listening a lot a lot). Once approved, the mastering and, yes, more listening. By the time this is out I'll be burned out!

I am planning on going ahead with pro made jewel case duplications via CDBaby. Short run, promo and pals only. I used to love making the jewel case copies from scratch (ensuring everything was as I wanted it on each) but I just cannot get into that anymore.

Speaking of age, it shows on the piano playing primarily due to me not playing regularly anymore. Lots of unexpected pain and at times my right hand simply stopped! Did not want to continue the solo! I am no more inclined to play each night than I was so... indeed the end is near if for no other reason. I have been playing for 58 years. There comes a time...

Vocally I never stopped singing. Every night I sing to everything from America to Led Zeppelin and all in-between. So the voice is still there!

I will not say never again. In fact I already have a list of songs for another album! All legacy catalog songs from the 80's - early 2000's that didn't get their due.

"Boston Dialect" - The Next Project

I have made an "executive decision" to divide "Boston Dialect", my next volume of verse, into two parts (I and II). Releasing 230 poems at once would be very difficult to digest as well as nearly impossible to review.

Later on, I will republish as one volume, keeping to my original design and artistic vision.

King Herod's Song 1977

40 years ago right around now (exact dates escape me) the PVMHS chorus staged "Jesus Christ Superstar". Many think this was a Stage One production, but no it was a chorus show directed by Mike Lamy.

I had the honor of singing the part of King Herod. One song. One scene. The result of which propelled me into a kind of "HS Stardom" reserved for athletes (something none of the actual "acting" I had done and awards I had won for it did).

For those who don't know why Herod is taunting Jesus and demanding he perform a "trick" for him. read the Gospel. Herod in the show was flamboyant and over the top. I played him as such!

Here is an audio only recording (my very first studio effort done in 1977 with the shows band and Lamy producing) of "King Herod's Song" (note I was 17 here):

CLICK

Text Blog #6

I have not been blogging much simply because I do not care.

Sure, stuff has been going on, but most of it is detailed on FaceBook and repeating myself has never been ideal. Plus very little has gone on with music or the new book (still on track for a November 1st release).

I have to say revisiting the old 4-tracks has lit a “fire”, albeit a little one, in me to maybe make another CD. Re-recording those old songs, something I said I’d never do, would… would what? Exactly.

It would waste a ton of money. Are any of the songs so fantastic I can’t live without fully actualizing them as real records? No.

So thus endth the debate.

Legacy Tracks from TuneCore CD's

2008, 2009, up to new music being released in 2010 I published via TuneCore four CD's of catalog material. Some released as cassettes in the 1990's, some never released.

"They Came From The Cellar" mixed tracks from the 1990's cassette with never before issued songs. This is one of them.

But some story first...

In 1991-1992 Barry Armstrong and I had a band called "Sticky Situation". The idea was for us to be co-lead singers and to just be a jam band. Joined by guitarist Ron Chapdelaine, guitarist Dave Wesling, and the late great drummer Steve Edmands, we had a fine few months just playing on Sunday nights for fun.

But then... the phone call came. Could we play The Paradise in Boston? Barry and Ron's old band, The Return, was on the recent "Boston Music Showcase" CD and a show featuring acts on the disc was booked. Since The Return had disbanded, well, could we do a set?

Hmmmm... The Paradise was and is still one of the top places for bands to play, to work to get to, and here it was being handed to us! Didn't take long to break the "no club dates" rule.

This song I wrote for the group was 4-tracked somewhere in early 1992 when we had become a club act. We played Grovers, Pavilion, and all the rockin haunts of the day... but, we never ever got back to The Paradise. Talk about "starting at the top" and workin your way down!!

Here is "Always Near Never Far". Inspired by a real girlfriend I had who often would come over on Friday night and stay till Sunday... Sunday night till Tuesday...

Always_Near_Never_Far.wmv

A real "creepy" song from "They Came From The Cellar".

Recorded in 1993 some said I was inspired by the then recent OJ Simpson murders. No. Not even a thought in my head when I wrote it. It is called "Pound of Flesh" which ought to give it away, what it's about, but I suppose you'd have to know Shakespeare. How many of ya do??

Pound of Flesh

Another rare out of print track from "They Came From The Cellar", released in 2008.

"Beacon of Heart" was intentionally minimalist. A full studio version with band would probably not be more "active".

I like my voice here. Just thought I'd add that! lol And I was still a heavy drinker\smoker back then (1994) :O

"And then in a flash of wisdom
The disconnected montage relates
You see the morning beacon of a heart
No longer to sate"

Beacon of a Heart

From "As Then Is Now" issued in 2007 (written and recorded in 1998).

"Sun of Awakening Skies" was a throw-back to the kind of titles I gave songs in the late 70's early years of the 80's.

It is also to my fiance back then. I was for a long while plagued with reoccurring dreams of traveling back to the house we shared. It was always the present in these dreams and I was always going as a guest to a party. The dream would always end with her and I talking...

Then one dream took place in a church yard... shortly after I wrote this song.

Unlike just about anything I wrote then or since I never knew what to do with it!

Sun of Awakening Skies

A song from 2007's "Tunes Out of Time". Here is "Get Yourself Together"! (Recorded at home in 1994).

Get_Yourself_Together.wmv

Paper_and_Stone.wmv

A personal fave from "Back In Business: Paul Tait 2003".

"Flaws in the Ointment". A sarcastic goofy twist on flies, cats... and nothing to do\nothing to lose. Originally a part of "Back In Business: Paul Tait 2003".

A self made four track wonder!

One month before launch I have decided to abort “Paul Tait Live For You 2017”. It just simply isn’t good enough. Not me, no, I am as great as always, but the recording sucks. No matter how I tried to make the sound better, really nothing could be done about it. I wanted the video up so bad, more to show how great I still was, that I made myself like it\accept it. But… no, it’s a mess.

So what I have done is edit together the live audio clips from the 80’s and 90’s into a 40 minute set. I called it simply “The Paul Tait Live Collection”. It features:

Brand New Day

Eagle and Hammer (the Cold War Bop)

I Can’t See You In My Dreams

Life in the Big City

I’m Fine

Run From Home

Heart of the Dawn

I Still Believe

Place Your Faith

Song to the Moon

Pop Musician

Destiny

Midnight Angels

The last two are the only tracks I could salvage from all that work I did in the spring. Oh well, as much as I hate wasting time it did get me playing again. I have not played much since. I started writing a song but soon lost interest. Writing a song means nothing unless I intend to record it one day and I am very committed to never engaging that process again. But even if I did... I have tons of catalog songs (some listed in the live recordings) that are ripe for full actualization.

I started work on “Boston Dialect”. Found a way to get the formatting I want by creating a new header in Arial 14. Titles are either the first line or something I think is cool from the verse.

That is about it for anything artistic. Well… considering pushing back the release of “Seven Centers” till November as an unexpected medical bill costing $200+ has popped in. Fucking stress test. I never paid any co-pay for them in MA!

In fact in MA, when I had a MassHealth plan, a paid NOTHING for my entire stay in the hospital! With Medicare, I’d have to pay $300.00 a day for the first five days and then nothing afterwards; but I doubt that. I am sure fees for this or co-pays for that would come pouring in.

Still plan on uploading and promoting the home shot “Paul Tait Live For You 2017” in September. The covers collection got over 5k views in one week so my fans in Asia and Europe have not forgotten me. USA? No traction video wise. Fucktards.

Living in fear of the federal status update on my disability. That at 58 I’ll have to find a job. I’d rather be dead. Just like when I got sick I would rather have died than continue on, I’d rather die than face another life changer. I have had no interest in being alive since 1995 so every little shit thing that happens is just another disgusting pile I have to eat\wade through.

Bye.

Yes I mourn the loss of those two tunes. Yet since I am "The Creator" I can resurrect them one day. Nothing is over till I am.

Other news is more of the same BS. When I talked these things I'd veer off into them but as a writer I realize unless something truly earth shattering happens; there is no point in writing about it.

Think I'll re-learn "Force of Will". That one almost made it on both "Full 88" and "Everything is Subject to Change". In fact, those album titles were to be "Force of Will" had the song been on either! Why? Cause each one was a force of my will. Neither really needed to be made; I had said "it all" as a singer\songwriter on "Born at Night", "Addendum", and "all that is left isd all that remains". "PTEP8. "Full 88", and "Everything is Subject to Change" were real big wastes of time, effort, and most importantly... money. But I wanted to make them and made them happen even though each was an uphill climb.

The results. Meh. Really. 26 songs of meh. Nothing on any of those three projects measures up to "Angel With a Vamp Inside", "Play For You", "No Friend of Mine", "I Didn't Quit I surrendered", "The Weird Old Musician Who Lives Across the Street", "Street Sleeper", "Mr, Clean", "1975"... and on and on.

The 26 that followed were uninspired. I did not care anymore. Not really. They came out cause they came out. Hell I write songs all the time nowadays but hardly ever sit at the piano and try and work them out because... I do not care. If I did, the end results would be a batch of more meh. So why??

Of course I need to give a shout out to "World of Pain", the final song on ESC that Joel spent an extra $500.00 mixing and so forth. It is a wonder at 9.5 minutes and features superb guitar from Casper Jones. But as a song? POS. One chord, cliche lyrics, and just a lot of rambling on my part. The original composition was not so loose. BUT I wanted a long rambling crazy song and well that is what I paid for.

Bye till whenever.

Text Blog #2

According to YouTube VBlog 59 has gotten ONE VIEW. Lowest ever. Worse, that one view was ME! (I always watch anything I post to make sure it looks okay online so… yeah.) YouTube analytics says ONE VIEW and that was from me.

Seeing the trouble I have been having with the camcorder not being recognized by the computer (requires a reboot and the use of a port belonging to another external), the camcorder shutting down from lack of memory but not indicating that with a “beep” or something that would signal me to shut up, and the simple fact that even if one of these gets watched the max has been about 20 views. This means the views this site gets (3-4 thousand a month) do not come from anyone watching the VBlogs.

Thus I must conclude they are a waste of time.

I like even numbers as much as I hate wasting time. I will therefore film a VBlog 60.

Not much to tell anyway…

“The Paul Tait Home Collection” will be promoted starting in July.

I will begin working on what will become “Boston Dialect” somewhere around August.

“Paul Tait Live for You 2017” will be uploaded and promoted in September (the 10th anniversary of launching my online presence in earnest).

“Seven Centers” has been pushed back to October so as not to collide with the YouTube concert (more a case of promotion money than truly caring about a collision in the market).

Real life? I see the heart doc for the results of my echo cardiogram Wednesday of this week. Then comes another appointment with my general practioner\endocranologist Dr. Grainger. In October I see the dentist to begin what will be a fun filled, pain filled, money drain (even with insurance).

Unless something out of the blue happens that is my life.

I will keep up my monthly journal (which no one gets to read till I am dead) and will make text blogs whenever anything noteworthy occurs.

VBlog 60 will be shot in July. Maybe. We’ll see…

Text Blog #1

Yes I call this Text Blog #1 as it is the first real text blog I am doing.

I made the “executive decision” not to buy a new camcorder (Canon support suggestions were things I had already done, of course, and therefore useless) as the cost of a decent one is on par with publishing my next book. Couple that with no plans to make any more music videos AND that pretty much no one watches the Video Blogs, well, it would be a huge waste of money.

So text it shall be.

So whazzzup?? Remember when that was a huge “Buzz Phrase”? Doubt anyone says it anymore. Except me. Here. Yup. Old Buzz Phrase Man they call me.

“Where’s the beef?” “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” And who remembers this one and also what commercial\product it was for, “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing.”? For extra points, here’s another related to the latter, “That was a spicy meatball!”

In keeping with the YouTube trend that started in 2015, the promotional clip for "Run From Home (live 1992)" has earned 16,725 views.

No further promotional videos are planned for "Diligence: 1983-2003".

You can watch all of my top videos here:

youtube.com/oldnewbie47

Really that is it. Nothing new on the book front, music front, or any front.

See ya next time.

No more Vblogs?

The “new camcorder I got in 2015 is, well, not new anymore. Like everything it has built in obsolescence. Guess two years is that limit!

Do I buy a new one? After all, it is nothing but a toy as no more music videos are planned.

Of course without that tool there will be no more video blogs. Seeing NO ONE really watches them (outside of a very small circle of friends) it is not a major loss. I can continue blogging in writing for any of you here that bother.

I shall see how I feel.

Paul’s Reflections on 2015

2015 was the busiest year I have ever had regarding new material being released. While I have issued more than one album in a year before, they were anthologies. For the first time I released two albums of newly recorded material in one year.

I say “newly recorded” because not all the songs were written for their respective releases. To be honest, half of “Full 88” comes from my back catalog.

Which songs? Well I’d be a cheat if I said the above and did not give you the details, right? So here are the tunes and years:

Midnight Angels (written in 1997)

Rain in Chicago (written in 1997)

Run Wild (written in 1988!)

Something Going On (written in 1998)

Unrequited (written in 1998)

The rest? “In The Sky There Are No Lines” was written in 2011, “One Thousand Times” comes from 2012, “Someone Else’s Eyes” and “The Notes and the Words” from 2013. The only song written close to recording was “Destiny” which was written in July of 2014.

“Everything is Subject to Change” is a little more immediate (as if that matters – I do not believe in expiration dates when it comes to songs. Unless they date themselves by being topical a good song transcends time).

Still, the songs were not written for the project. They were culled from 2011-2014. Example, “Don’t Stop Being a Rocker” was written right after my hospital adventure in 2011. The other songs came as the lean years went by.

The most recent of the songs was “Self Awareness” which I wrote “to order” as I needed one more track to make ten (nothing in my catalog fit). I wrote it in November of 2014 pretty much in the time it takes to listen to it.

The truth of it all is the last honest burst of inspiration that resulted in an album of songs as one collective was 2011’s “all that is left is all that remains”. That was meant to be my last album. And it should have been. I had nothing more to say. Personally, I should have died when my heart and kidney’s failed. “all that is left is all that remains” would have been a very fitting goodbye.

Back to 2015…

So what I think? After all is said and done I have things to say about each album as well as the videos. More exactly, what I thought was NOT good as there is more good than bad.

“Full 88”: Through no ones fault but mine as a writer, “Someone Else’s Eyes” and “The Notes and the Words” are boring as hell. They go nowhere. One straight line from beginning to end. No oomph to the choruses. Nothing.

“ESC”: In “Some Days” the vocals could be more prominent. They get buried in the mix. That is about it for that album! No other complaints.

Videos?? My favs are:

Run Wild

Midnight Angels

Self Awareness

Don’t Stop Being a Rocker

Destiny

The alchemy I concoct with post color adjustment, superimposed collages, and wipes all are at their best in those clips.

2015 also saw the publication of my first book of verse. “Stray Lines” came out in June and was a critical and artistic success.

Money? Ha ha ha

That pretty much rounds up the year. The last year for music as I have no intention of recording anything on this kind of scale ever again. Too expensive and too much stress. Going forward plans are to publish my vast back catalog of poetry. I have approximately 12,000 poems so… lots to do!

Thank you for your support.

He reportedly liked that. He liked that New Yorkers were not overwhelmed by the sight of a Beatle walking down the street with them. He was so comfortable there he never had bodyguards. He didn't want anything to separate him from the people in the city.

He was also very generous with his time and with autographs. No diva-tudes from John, no. He signed whatever was put before him by whoever was putting it before him — including an album from a shy young man who waited in front of the Dakota Apartments on the early evening of Dec. 8, 1980.

He handed John a copy of his latest album, "Double Fantasy," and after signing it, John reportedly looked at the young man and asked, "Is that it? Is there anything else?"

The man shook his head, no; mumbled a thank-you; and John and Yoko headed off in their limo to the Record Plant where they would spend the next few hours working on Yoko's single, "Walking on Thin Ice."

But there was something else the young autograph-seeker wanted. Something unspeakable. You see, that same man would still be waiting outside the Dakota at approximately 11:30 p.m. and would murder John Lennon.

I was half asleep in my strange old bedroom — home to earn cash to head back out on my own musical journey, this time out to LA. My parents were watching Monday Night Football when my mother came in my room and asked if I were awake.

Acknowledging that I was, she said, "John Lennon has been shot." Strangely, I did not leap out of bed and dash to the TV like a madman. No, I quietly, calmly asked, "Is he dead?" She replied, "They don't think so, but no one knows right now."

Unbelievably, I soon fell asleep! Why? Because never in my wildest thoughts could I imagine it being intentional. I figured it being New York, a city I knew so well, a stray bullet hit John in the arm or leg and that would be all. Or it had been a robbery attempt; and, again, John would not be mortally wounded. Just a flesh wound, as they say in the movies.

No one would intentionally shoot John Lennon!

Then the next day... oh, God, that awful next day.

I did not know Mr. Lennon. But I knew John. The "John" that was always followed in name by "Paul, George, and Ringo." That is what I lost on Dec. 8, 1980. I lost "the John" following by the Three. I lost The Beatles.

Never again would they be in the same room. I'd never see a picture of them in their '60s laughing over some goofy thing that had happened on the way to the photo shoot. All hope was lost for me to hear John and Paul sing together again. And as silly as it sounds now, for a while, honestly, it felt like hope in and of itself was lost.

Everything about The Beatles was forever covered by a cloud. Every Beatle record, movie, live show. Everything they ever did was tainted.

Their early records that just rang out with the uninhibited pleasures of Beatlemania, like "She Loves You," now brought tears to my eyes. But they were not tears for John, or for Yoko, Sean, Julian or anyone but for me. Aching, selfish tears, they were; tears for what I had lost; for what inside of me was forever gone, what was forever broken.

I did not know Mr. Lennon. But I knew The Beatles, and when the remaining three did "The Beatles Anthology," telling their story in their own words, there was an empty place at the table. As great as it was seeing and hearing Paul, George and Ringo together, even making a new recording using an old John demo to go by, it was off kilter, off balance, incomplete. We'd hear Paul, George and Ringo muse on Beatlemania and Shea Stadium (the biggest rock concert in the world at the time); but we would only have old taped interviews from the '70s for John's insight.

Now, 35 years later, my parents have since passed away, as have my artistic ambitions. But as long as I live I will never forget where I was that night. How Howard Cosell, of all people, made the announcement; or how in the days that followed Yoko asked for 10 minutes of silence to honor John; how I shut the Muzak system down in the store where I worked since the management wouldn't comply; how we, as in the folks in the Boston music community and in the local colleges signed a petition to have the UN start its assembly with a minute of silence honoring John's post-Beatle efforts for world peace; and how each anniversary brought with it its own moments of sadness.

I did not know Mr. Lennon. But I knew The Beatles and I knew the John who played guitar, harmonica and piano, and wrote and sang for them. And I know that at least for me, since his murder, nothing has been quite the same.

Random Things...

I made the “executive decision” to push out the video for “Self Awareness”. I had nixed it all together due to, going by my established schedule; it would not have debuted until January 2016. I want all this music stuff done by years end! Seeing that “I Don’t Have an In-Between” earned 16,703 views in little over two weeks I figured “strike while the iron is hot”.

Been debating, as I could not sleep, the concept of an autobiography. Nothing new, just always envisioned it divided into two parts; The Person and then The Artist. I’d cover the same periods of time only from two different perspectives. Sounds unique, huh? Well, it also sounds laborious and perhaps confusing. Best to integrate, of course focusing on the arts, but side mentioning the personal horseshit.

See my life has been two separate ones. As an artist I was\am one of a kind. Creative in so many ways no one I have ever met or actually heard of can match me. As a person however I have been a total loss. Lousy friend, angry worker (at any job), heavy drinker, crappy at romance, just a general slug. So why dedicate half a book to that asshole?

See though? There is the ground plan\basic architecture (Cover time periods… Birth to 1971, 1972-1978, 1979-1981, etc etc). So I do not have to do it now. Someone else, if necessary, can!!

New Book Update

Book Update: I finished it. Well, first pass. All 60 poems picked, edited, spellchecked, and formatted. Now to leave it alone for a while. Then go back and read through it to ensure I do not think it all is crap. Even if I do I'll still publish because I cannot trust my opinion of myself when it comes to my verse writing. Music\songs, sure... I can tell when one is worth pursuing and one is simply not good enough. The verses alone?? Nope. Best I can do is make sure they are not out and out embarrassing!!

I plan on a February release date (Amazon\Kindle, Barnes and Nobles, etc). In the meantime, my critically acclaimed first book of verse, "Stray Lines", is available for download!!

Note: These are more Booklets than books. Being a new poet, I read that it is unusual for one to publish at once more than 50-100 in a single volume; unless it is an anthology. So I picked 60 for my first four volumes. Then... look out... I have a project in mind for about 150-200 in a single book! I will warn you all ahead of time.

About Casper Jones...

I have to say that without the guitar prowess of Casper Jones "Everything is Subject to Change" would not be the album it is. While no doubt Joel Simches could have found a guitarist or several guitarists to play on the songs, I doubt any would have matched the outstanding playing of Casper. Honestly I would have been hesitant to go ahead without him!

He proved his technique and creativity when we worked on "...born at night...", "all that is left is all that remains", and the EP "Addendum". I never had to give him more than a hint of what I was looking for. He delivered and then some.

Original indeed but you can hear elements of suggestions I gave him like Blackmore, Page, Iommi, and so forth on certain tracks. He himself injected the stylings of the great Dick Dale, the king of surf guitar, for "Don't Stop Being a Rocker" (I actually did not suggest anything because I wasn't really thinking guitar on that one as far as a specific) and boy does it work!!

Like "Full 88" was The Joel Simches Chocoblis album in that it would not sound as lush and full without his input; this is, to me, The Casper Jones Album. Could not have been done without him!

Thank you Casper for being a huge part of "Everything is Subject to Change"!!

Now am I being awfully pretentious in thinking everyone is gonna love this new album? Maybe. But I LOVE IT and that is what counts more than anyone else loving\liking it. Sure I hope they do but... what is this that I do all about anyway? My fulfilling what I set out to do in 1978.

Updates and Projections

Well November is… too darn far away! Hated to put "Everything is Subject to Change" out so far after it was done but releasing it in July after everything else would have been anti-climatic. I’d hate for “the end” to be anti-climatic!

As far as that goes, it won’t be the end of releasing stuff. No, I already have plans to re-release the live material recorded some 25 years ago! Now it’s antique! Songs recorded at Grovers, Brandies University, The Pavilion in Billerica, and the Balcony Lounge in Peabody.

I first put some live stuff out in 1997 on tape, then in 2007 on CD. It has ever been reviewed but… how can it be compared to studio stuff? These were board mixes to a cassette! No mixing post production other than editing and noise reduction.

For that reason it pains me to not include the version of “I Still Believe” from The Channel. I really wanted that place represented but… the board mix had so much hiss even noise reduction did not clean it up enough! And too much NR muddies the performance so… I had to delete the tune from the project!

Nonetheless it will be 8 songs; four available nowhere else! Four pretty good songs that “got away” and never got the studio treatment.

But that won’t be released till next year… Then I feel everything will be complete. The total picture of what I did musically would not be complete without live being represented. I was a live performer first, my first love was performance; be as an actor or a singer.

Like being plugged into a current when I played with a band, especially with a solid drummer, I was never still. Sure, stuck often behind the piano, I still never just sat still.

Now I am old and boring. :p

Update on Release Date for ESC

ESC UPDATE:

Yes "Everything is Subject to Change" (ESC for short) is uploaded to CDBaby, finalized, and set for world-wide release on November 2nd.

The first video single, "I Don't Have an In-Between", is finished and I am plotting the next one as I write (for a song called "Don't Stop Being a Rocker"). Sure these won't be posted till months from now but one never knows the future so I like to have everything done ahead of time.

Then that is it. No additional plans for recording.

With the April release of the piano-centric "Full 88" and the guitar rocking ESC coming up that says everything musically I have to say. 100 of my recordings will be online for sale. 40 or so of my videos on YouTube. What else but for the "next level" which is 25 years too late if it even were to manifest?

So in spite of the universe playing it's wicked joke I feel I have prevailed. I did it myself with no record company, no publishing house, no nothing but me and, in recent years, hired studio help. I have sold music in every country and have had my videos viewed in each one of them as well. What else is there but tons of money and "Ellen"??

So November 2nd. Oh I'll remind you. Lots of times!
-Paul

Update on New CD

Things are moving along with the upcoming CD. I still have to decide when I am going to release it.

A lot depends on this months and next months sales reports from CDBaby. If "Full 88" has not been downloading or songs from it not being cherry picked then I need to let the CD "breath" without adding another to the mix. Maybe add another video or relaunch the campaign for the Web Commercial.

If still nothing by fall, or nothing significant, I will chalk it up as a mis-fire. Lumping all ballads together may have been a mistake. Most of my dl's have traditionally been the uptempo rocking songs.

Then I may release this new one towards Christmas. As I have mentioned, all the tracks on it rock.

Pandora radio REFUSED "Full 88" because it was too mellow they said, so I do not think they'll refuse the new one as, imo, it melts glass! Casper Jones's guitar work sure as heck melts it!!

However, if the sales figures show the album is doing good... I will sit on the new one till next year. It will kill me. But I will.

So I shall see what the reports say.

New CD in Mixing Stage!

The next CD is coming along. Now it is in Joels hands...

Major kudos to guitarist Casper Jones! His artistry and ability to play just about any style (kick ass hard rock to reggae) has made this production all I had hoped.

Nonetheless, I am so glad this is the end. Like I said to Joel during "Full 88" I forget how things get for me internally right around this particular time in production. I am also reminded now of why I drank a lot, lol

Working title for the project? "Not For Lack of Trying" but that will probably change.

From now onward it is me and poetry. For that form of published expression it is just me and the distributor... no one else. No illustrator. No proof reader. I do it all.

Oh but don't despair... I'll find something to bitch about! May even do an old fashioned Vblog just to vent!!

Full 88 and What is Next!

With "Full 88" just beginning it's shelf life it might seem odd that I have begun a NEW CD PROJECT with the incomparable Joel Simches. But I have!

Yes, ten new songs are in the works and if all goes as planned I hope to release another CD in the late fall\winter. Why?

I always admired the bands and artists from the 60's and 70's who were contracted to released two albums a year; one every six months. So in that spirit, I am aiming to do the same.

On-board this time around is master guitarist Casper Jones. As you may recall, Casper played on the albums "...born at night..." and "all that is left is all that remains". I am more than honored to be working again with such an immense talent!!

Recording on my end was done a while ago. Joel's work begins in earnest within the next week or so. Once rough mixes are made, they will be send to Casper, who now resides in his native Denmark. He has a home setup and will then send back tracks he's done to us to have Joel do the mixing and mastering. A true International Effort!!

Well, that is the plan! Of course I know anything can happen an so In will remain "edgy" till all is said and done. Nothing new!

So lots going on.

As with "Full 88" this album nearly did not get made as I felt the recent CD was a fine Goodbye to that aspect of my creative life. The new goal was to jump fully into putting together books of verse for publication. Yet I still had these songs... I could not just leave them to gather dust... PLUS they are the direct opposite of the material on "Full 88"... raw fast guitar-centric rockers!

So when this is out consider "Full 88" and it as a big 1970's double album with one disc being "Piano Paul" and the other being "Rocker Paul"!

Music Update: To the next level

Basic tracks (piano\keyboards\lead vocals) have been completed and the tracks sent up to MA where real drums, bass, and assorted extras will be added. Boston legend Joel Simches will be spearheading the project in Waltham at Watch City Studios.

Once done and mixed, I’ll get the tracks back and make decisions on what was done and if anything needs to be changed. Already I know I need to re-sing one of the songs. Playing-wise I am pretty happy with what I have done; though never completely (of course).

If all goes smoothly I expect to have the new release out by spring of next year.

Current Music Update...

Good news! The files sent to the engineer in Boston synch up perfectly! That was a major concern and now it is not!

I have half the album done from my piano\keys\vocal perspective. Next will be for Joel Simches (engineer, drummer, bass player, percussion, and also additional keyboards where required) to add his expert playing to the tracks. Then depending on how the music has changed or not, I may re-sing a few of the songs.

Each step, on my end, brings new technological challenges. I am sure to some they may be no-brainers, but to a musical technophobe like me, they are hurdles. Odd thing is, I am a certified computer tech in Windows based applications! Yet with music tech... I suck.

Hating it probably doesn't help.

In other important news, the symptoms of Bells palsy have greatly improved. I am singing almost 100% normally. The "almost" is not a stopper or something so blatant that it is distracting... just something I am aware of and work arund where necessary.

So onward and upward. Five more tunes to make an even ten and then??? Joel suggested I go ahead and lay the basics for the next ten even if I have no solid plans to record another CD. At least then they'll be ready should I decide in a year or so to make a all rocker follow-up to this piano based entry.

New Music Update...

Well I have all the new equipment. Manual much clearer to follow than a Japanese translation. Nonetheless, I am in full panic mode about starting this.

Why? I hate being my own engineer. I like sitting and playing, not worrying about levels and so forth. And if it were not for the lazy SOB's down here in Central Florida studios I'd be in a studio doing this and not a converted bedroom.

Also, the last time I was engineering for myself it was back in analog days AND 11 years ago. I had that down to the point I could go to the basement at any hour, hit REC and lay down a new idea. Many of those ideas are now distributed on "Rest of the Best of" and "AlternaTait Deluxe).

But this digital thing. Pisses me off.

Music Update

The ZOOM Recorder is apparently damaged or the SD card necessary for recording is damaged. Won’t go into deep details but I’ll need to return it to Guitar Center for either service or replacement.

New Project and Health

I have suffered an occurrence of something called Bell's Palsy. Symptoms resemble that of a stroke, drooping mouth, difficulty in speaking, etc. Of course singing is frustrating as all heck.

No treatment. No, just have to wait for it to suddenly go away as suddenly as it arrived.

Good news is I can record the basics, even a crappy vocal for follow purposes, and send them up North to be worked on.
